Journey of a Developer to Tester – Meet Our Tester : Ms. Nija Krishna K

Can you share your journey to becoming a software tester?

Started my career as a Xamarin developer with a focus on front-end development. Over time, I started to venture into back-end development as well. However, I soon realized that development was not my cup of tea and got attracted to Software Testing. You get to test different types of software, from web applications to mobile apps, and there is always something new to learn. This variety in work keeps the job interesting and challenging, and you get to learn something new every day. So when I received the opportunity to transition into testing, I just made the move and currently, I am thoroughly enjoying my job.

What benefits does your development background bring to testing?

My career in testing has been greatly enhanced by my background in development. It has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the software development process, which has allowed me to identify potential issues and conduct software testing more effectively. Additionally, my familiarity with databases and tools like SQL and Postman has proved invaluable in my testing role, as I can effortlessly understand technical language and diagnose the root cause of problems. Moreover, my problem-solving abilities developed during my time as a developer have enabled me to pinpoint and address issues with greater efficiency. Lastly, working closely with developers is a crucial aspect of testing, and as someone who has been a developer, I can communicate with them more effectively.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in testing technologies?

To keep myself informed about the latest advancements in testing technologies, I use a variety of resources. These include researching for new technologies in Google, watching YouTube videos related to testing events and topics, joining online communities, following industry experts on LinkedIn, and taking advantage of training opportunities provided by my company.

Can you share a moment that you are particularly proud of?

One particular moment that fills me with pride is when I was able to showcase the value of my profession. Despite hearing some unfavorable comments about the industry from a family member, I didn’t let it dampen my confidence as the very next day, I had the opportunity to provide support for their daughter’s admission and demonstrate how vital my profession is. This experience only reinforced my belief in the significance of testing as a career and its positive impact. What made me feel even prouder was the appreciation I received from my clients and colleagues. It’s truly an honor to be a part of this field.

What is your  passion outside of work?

Beyond my professional life, I have a deep passion for traveling and discovering new destinations, cultures, and traditions with my loved ones. I find great joy in planning trips, researching unique attractions, and immersing myself in the local way of life. Also, music is an essential part of my life, and I enjoy listening to various genres. Although I may not be the most talented singer, I find singing to be fun and cathartic way to express myself. Whether I am exploring a new city or singing along to my favorite tunes, these passions bring immense fulfillment and balance to my life.

What do you enjoy most and find the most challenging about your job?

The final outcome of an application, which is the result of thorough testing, is what I love most about my job. The most challenging part is when there are conflicts with developers, especially when they don’t agree with the bugs found during testing. Good communication and understanding between testers and developers is essential in these scenarios.

How would you describe your experience working at Testvox?

I started my career at Testvox as a Xamarin developer, learned C# and transitioned from front-end to back-end coding with database handling. Testvox has been instrumental in my growth as a professional, from creating APKs to dealing with clients and working as part of a team. The management and team at Testvox have been supportive and motivated me throughout my journey. When I switched to testing, Testvox provided me with the opportunities to work on good projects and improve my confidence in the field.

Why would you encourage someone to consider a career in software testing?

As we become more reliant on technology, skilled software testers are needed more than ever. And the best part is, software testing is an ongoing process that provides a lot of job security. It’s  also an intellectually stimulating field that requires critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. You’ll get to work on different projects and technologies, which means you’ll have a variety of experiences. And since testing involves working closely with developers, project managers, and stakeholders, you’ll get to collaborate and build relationships with others. So if you enjoy problem-solving and working with technology, a career in software testing can be challenging, fulfilling, and financially rewarding. Trust me, it’s a great choice!
